Proposal 3: Renewable energy

Proposal 3 has turned out to be one of the more hotly contested races with no statement or claim not being challenged by backers or opponents. It has made for strange bedfellows and unlikely opponents.

The proposed constitutional amendment would require utilities to get 25 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources by the year 2025.

Possible sources would be solar, wind, biomass or hydro sources.

In a state that generates 60 percent of its energy from coal-fired plants, that’s a major change.

Wind power is the most likely way utilities will work to reach the higher standard. But, wind farms face opposition in many communities, and residents along Lake Michigan have worked to keep companies from siting massive wind turbines offshore.
